There are two things I really love: caramel and small businesses. Shotwell Candy Co. in Memphis, Tennessee is a perfect, delicious example of what happens when those two things come together.
Shotwell Candy Co. was founded by Jerrod and Lisa Smith and named after Jerrod’s great-grandfather L. Shotwell George, who owned a general goods store in Kansas, which is how you really know that Shotwell Candy Co. is a family-based business!
The Smiths don’t sell those cellophane-wrapped, tooth-busting regular ol’ caramels; they sell soft, melt-in-your-mouth, caramels packed with flavor and combinations you would never expect! Also, Shotwell Candy Co. refrains from using high-fructose corn syrup in all of their products, which makes the caramels even more enjoyable (they’re more healthy…right?).
Here are some of my Shotwell Candy Co. favorites:
Beer and pretzels have always been a classic American combination, but combined together? In a caramel? Perfect. Shotwell uses Ghost River Brewing’s Copperhead Red Ale in these caramels, adding a malty flavor that pairs nicely with the salty pretzels. The texture of this caramel, and all of the others, is so perfect. The caramels melt in your mouth and are heavenly. I can’t even describe it to the fullest extent. Seriously, just try these caramels!
I was so, so excited to try these since salted caramel is one of my weaknesses. And this held up to my salted caramel expectations! These caramels are infused with house-made Tennessee whiskey vanilla extract and have Celtic grey sea salt on top. The Original Salted Caramel has a deep, dark caramel flavor, which is a major plus for me since I like my caramels dark. You can feel the salt crunch, which is definitely nice in a salted caramel. It’s perfectly salty and smooth, so much so that it practically melts in your mouth. I might cry a little when I run out.
Have you ever had an Old Fashioned caramel? No? Well, that’s because Shotwell Candy Co. is the secret to this classic, yet innovative caramel. Shotwell Candy Co. infuses these caramels with bitters, Kentucky bourbon whiskey, and orange extract. They don’t do anything to deviate from the original Old Fashioned, but putting all the flavors of this classic cocktail into a caramel is genius.
Shotwell Candy Co. caramels also make the perfect gift. Who doesn’t love caramels and with flavors like Craft Beer & Pretzel and Caribbean Coconut, there’s a caramel for everyone! Plus, they sell their caramels in hand-stamped pinstriped boxes finished with a hand-tied bow of wax cord. You can also send a custom note in the style of vintage recipe card if you want to brighten up someone’s day. And if anyone wants to send me some Shotwell Candy Co. caramels, I certainly wouldn’t object! 🙂
